The origin of formal wear is open for discussion – one name forever associated with formality and uniformity is Beau Brummell – king of the dandies and one-time favourite of King George IV. The suit started to take shape in the 18th century, in a move away from opulent fabrics such as velvet and brocade, to a more streamlined, practical wardrobe. Dress codes have since changed significantly, becoming more relaxed, and more remote/freelance workers has led to a less regimented approach to both work and the clothing one wears while working. But everything is cyclic, so watch this space!
